ENVIRONMENT
Ozone layer defined:
The ozone belt shields the Earth from excessive ultraviolet radiation generated
by the Sun.
Greenhouse effect defined:
The greenhouse effect is a warming near the Earth’s surface that results
when the Earth’s atmosphere traps the sun’s heat. The greenhouse
effect is what makes the Earth habitable. Without the presence of water vapor,
carbon dioxide, and other gases in the atmosphere, too much heat would escape
and the Earth would be too cold to sustain life.
Green products defined:
Green products are environmentally safe products that contain no chlorofluorocarbons,
are degradable (can decompose), and are made from recycled materials.
Acid rain defined:
When gasoline, coal, or oil is burned, their waste products of sulfur dioxide
and nitrogen dioxide combine in complex chemical reactions with water vapor
in clouds to form acids. Acid rain is between pH (potential for Hydrogen) 4.3
– pH 4.8 acidity worldwide. Any rain below pH 5.0 is considered acidic.
How much space is saved in a landfill from recycled paper?
Each ton saves more than three cubic yards of landfill space.
How many trees are saved by recycling paper?
One ton (907 kilograms) of recycled waste paper spares 17 trees.
